Yesterday (2010-02-06) Benjamin and myself were again in Lech/Zürs snowboarding; just like three weeks ago. Last time (2010-01-17) Pattrick and Torsten were also able to join. This time it was only Benjamin and me.
The weather was similar to our last visit. Mostly cloudy with a few peeks of sunshine. This time, however, we had lots of new deep powder and it was freeriding time. Extremely exhausting but great fun.
Again. Just like last week we were in Zürs/Lech. This time I went with Torsten and Pattrick. Torsten has already posted about our day in the snow and there are also few pictures.
I just came back from a perfect day snowboarding in Lech. Benjamin and I started at 05:30 in the morning and only three hours later we arrived. The weather was not perfect, but we were riding down some real interesting and adventurous slopes. It was also extremely exhausting. Hoping to go again next week.
Just like last year I had to do some snowboard maintenance for the new snowboard season which will start in a few days. As every year we will go to the glaciers in Sölden in a few days.
In addition to the usual waxing and edge sharpening Jennifer’s board had a deep scratch which has been removed in the same way it has been done with my board.

Finally, after two years thinking about it, I did it. I bought myself a freestyle board. My old board is a freeride only board and freeride is what I am still most interested in, but for the early trips to the mountains when there is still not so much snow I hope I will enjoy my Falconoid. According to Amplid’s website this year’s Falconoid (2009) has following cool sounding features:
- P10 SUPERLIGHT WOOD CORE
- MAGMA EDGE SHOCK ABSORBER
- 360° WRAP AROUND STEEL EDGE
- 4×2 INSERT PATTERN
- T.P.U. SPIN TIPS
- DOOMSDAY CAMBER
- GLASSFIBER IMPACT BIAX >
- FMC BEZIER SPLINE SIDECUT
- 22° SLANTED ABS SIDEWALLS
- EXTRUDED BA 4.4 DURASPEED BASE
- SHRED READY
I bought last year’s (2008) model but I suppose the features have not changed dramatically. I have no idea what most of those things mean, but I like SHRED READY.
Two days ago (Saturday) we returned from our one week holiday in Sölden. Of course we were snowboarding again and it was by far the best trip to Sölden since a long time. We had lots of fresh-fallen snow and most of the time it was really sunny. Perfect powder; perfect freeriding conditions.

Yesterday we (Jennifer, Benjamin, Torsten, David and me) were in Hochjoch. This was the first snowboarding trip this year on real snow (in contrast to the glacier). It had lots of snow, especially for this time of the year and it was already pretty cold (-13°C) in the valley. Not much was already open but there also were not too many people.

More pictures
It has been really great. The snow and weather were perfect and we were lucky that it already had so much snow that early in the seasons. It hopefully stays that way and I hope that we will be in the mountains almost every week if possible.
From the last visit to the glacier, at the beginning of November, my snowboard had a scratch so deep that it needed some attention.

At first I had to prepare the area around the gouge and remove anything sticking out from the base.

I then used something (I have no idea if it has a name) which you have to light. I got if from Benjamin. He already repaired some gouges on his board with this. So you basically light it and it starts to burn. It then starts to drip and I just let it drip into the gouge.

Then all that is left to do is to scrap off the excess and smooth the surface.

The result is not perfect but right now I am pretty happy about it. I will see if it is any good after I have actually used the board in the snow.
Yesterday we returned from our short snowboard trip to Sölden. As David already mentioned we took an asymmetric route (just like our mirror server
).
In addition to David’s GPS tracking I recorded the way from the valley up to the glacier

as well as my way on the Tiefenbach glacier.

The following pictures were taken by David and myself with our mobile phones:

On the last day (Saturday 2007-11-03) was the snowboard opening in Sölden and many snowboard companies presented their new equipment and I tested a board from FTWO as well as a freestyle board from Nitro. The board from Nitro (Misfit 160) was a really good freestyle board and if I am going to buy a freestyle board it might be just this board.
In preparation to our trip to the glacier in Sölden in two days I made our snowboards yesterday ready for the snow. In April I covered them with hot wax and now I had to remove the excess wax.

The first step was to remove the excess wax with my scraper:

The second step was to buff up the base using a brush:

Then I used a cloth to polish it up:

The last step was to sharpen the edges with a special edge tool, which makes it pretty easy. Although I am not really convinced that the result is as good as I want it to be. I will know more in two days.
