GUADEC

Today Alex and I were attending the 6thGUADEC in Stuttgart. We basically had to go because it is so close to were we live that the drive there is less than 30 minutes.

It was rather good and much better than I had it expected to be. We were attending a talk by Keith Packard about freedesktop.org followed by Owen Taylor’s talk about Cairo. After lunch we attended the keynote by Miguel de Icaza who is rather communicative for a geek. Of course he was constantly trying to convince everybody how great Mono is.

Fedora

After a long time I have finally updated my netselect package and I hope that I can soon import into CVS.

Books

After finishing The Amazing Maurice And His Educated Rodents from Terry Pratchett I read The Wee Free Men. I liked both books. There were pretty easy to read especially as they are mostly written for children.

After finishing The Wee Free Men I read Assassin’s Apprentice from Robin Hobb. I bought the book from Amazon because I saw it listed under “Customers who bought this book also bought”. There I read a review from someone who had bought the same book I was currently buying and also saw Assassin’s Apprentice listed under “Customers who bought this book also bought”. After reading the review I thought that it might be a book that I like and I liked it.

Currently I am reading from Philip Pullman the first book of the His Dark Materials trilogy called The Golden Compass.

Episode III

On Monday I finally saw Revenge of the Sith. This was the first of the new Star Wars movies which I didn’t saw at the first night because of our holidays on Fuerteventura. I saw Episode I and Episode II on the first night as well as the re-release of the original movies 1997. So this was the first Star Wars movie I didn’t see at the opening night.

Of course I did like the movie; after all it is Star Wars. I really like the Star Wars universe Lucas has created with all the details in the background. The story of prequels might not be the best, but I just like to watch these movies.

Fuerteventura

Two days ago (Mon, 23 May 2005) Jennifer and I came back from a one week (Mon, 16 May 2005 – Mon, 23 May 2005) holiday on Fuerteventura. We had a great time relaxing and reading on the beach. I made a lot of pictures of the dunes and the ocean. The weather was pretty good and we were almost every day in the ocean when it was not forbidden due to strong current and big waves.

Update (2009-02-22): Only three years and nine months later I have finally put the pictures online. Fuerteventua (Corralejo) 2005.

Kover

I started to work on kover again. I removed all my own code doing cd accesses and cddb accesses. I am now using libcddb and libcdio. I found some bugs in libcddb and was in contact with the author and all bugs and feature request were implemented very quickly. To good thing now is that I don’t have to debug any cddb accesses any more. I can now always blame it on libcddb. :-)

I could remove much of my own code and made it much simpler. Not only cddb over http is now supported but also the previously unsupported native cddb protocol. And with the use of libcdio I increased the portability of kover
because until now it did only run on Linux and FreeBSD. Now it runs on all platform support by libcdio.

Fedora Activity

Today I did some work on my Fedora Extras packages. After reading the mail of packages not correctly creating the debuginfo packages I fixed the fbida and xdesktopwaves packages. I also made a list of packages which I am maintaining in Fedora Extras to have a better overview for what I am responsible for. After having compiled the list I saw that some packages have been updated upstream and antiword for example has been updated. Other packages requiring updates will be updated soon.

I also had a chance to test the new buildsystem. After getting used to it I think I already broke something because I had a broken ssh connection to the CVS server. Let’s see if I really broke it or if it can be easily fixed.
