IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT THE HP NETSTATION SOFTWARE 7.1 INSTALLATION !! 1. Using Multiple Versions of HP Netstation Software: NOTE: the following instructions do not apply to IBM AIX systems. Consult your smit documentation for alternatives. By default, a new version of HP Netstation Software 7.1 replaces (and overwrites) any existing ENWARE version. If you want to keep the old version in a separate directory, and run the new version and the old version in parallel, do the following: a. Ensure you have sufficient disk space to maintain two full versions. Each additional version requires approximately 40 MB of disk space. To save disk space, the following directories are shared between versions: /usr/lib/X11/700X/fonts /usr/lib/X11/700X/etc /usr/lib/X11/700X/config For HP-UX 10.x systems, the following directories are shared: /opt/hpxt/enware/xthome/fonts /opt/hpxt/enware/xthome/etc /opt/hpxt/enware/xthome/config The files in these directories are rarely changed from version to version, and do not need to be updated every time the system is updated. b. Create or touch the /usr/lib/X11/700X/Multi_version file. For HP-UX 10.x systems, /opt/hpxt/enware/xthome/Multi_version. c. Install HP Netstation Software. When the HP Netstation Software installation script detects the "Multi_version" file, it places all new HP Netstation Software files in a separate directory. After the installation, all netstations will continue to use the previous version unless you explicitly switch them over individually, or upgrade the entire site. To transfer individual netstations over to the current version of software, refer to the "HP Netstation Software 7.1 Technical Reference". ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- INSTALLING ON AN HP-UX 10.x SYSTEM Note: If you plan to run a multi-version system, remember to touch the file: "/opt/hpxt/enware/xthome/Multi_version" before you install. 1. As superuser, log into the file server. 2. If you want to remove a previous version of ENWARE software, type: swremove ENWARE 3. Type: cd / 4. Create a mount point for the CD-ROM by typing: mkdir /cdrom 5. Mount the CD by typing: /etc/mount -F cdfs -o ro /dev/dsk/"cdrom_device" /cdrom 6a. If you will NOT use multiple versions of HP Netstation Software, run the following script: swinstall -s /cdrom/HP10.IMG\;1 ENWARE 6b. If you WILL use multiple versions of HP Netstation Software, run the following script: swinstall -x allow_multiple_versions=true -s /cdrom/HP10.IMG\;1 ENWARE and then configure the new version as follows: swconfig -x allow_multiple_versions=true ENWARE,r=7.10 7. When installation is finished, check the log file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- INSTALLING ON AN HP-UX 9.x SYSTEM Note: If you plan to run a multi-version system, remember to touch the file: "/usr/lib/X11/700X/Multi_version" before you install. 1. As superuser, log into the file server. 2. Create a mount point for the CD-ROM by typing: mkdir /cdrom 3. Mount the CD by typing: /etc/mount /dev/dsk/"cdrom_device" /cdrom -t cdfs -o ro 4. Run the following script: /etc/update 5. Select "Change Source or Destination". 6. Select "From Tape Device to Local System". 7. Change the source by typing: /cdrom/HP700.IMG;1 8. Press "Done". 9. Choose either to install all filesets or selected filesets. 10. When installation is finished, check the log file. 11. Start the X session manager and unmount the CD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- INSTALLING ON A SOLARIS SYSTEM Note: If you plan to run a multi-version system, remember to touch the file: "/usr/lib/X11/700X/Multi_version" before you install. 1. As superuser, log into the file server. 2. Insert the CD-ROM. 3. If necessary, mount the CD-ROM (not required if you use SunOS 5.2 or later with the vold daemon). 4a. For Solaris 1, run the following script: /cdrom/install.sun 4b. For Solaris 2, run the following script: /usr/sbin/pkgadd -d /cdrom/enware/solaris2.img 5. Eject the CD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- INSTALLING ON AN IBM AIX SYSTEM 1. As superuser, log into the file server. 2. Insert and mount the CD-ROM. 3. If you installed a previous version of ENWARE, use smit to remove it. 4. Run "smit". 5. Choose: "Software Installation and Maintenance". 6. Choose: "Install and Update Software". 7. Choose: "Install / Update Selectable Software (Custom Install)". 8. Choose: "Install / Update From All Available Software". Note: You may be required to set a number of installation options on the smit installation menus. We recommend that you set the "COMMIT software updates?" option to "no" and the "SAVE replaced files?" option to "yes". 5. In the field labeled: "INPUT device / directory for software" type: /cdrom/aix.img 6. You can choose to install all of the HP Netstation Software or only selected options. If you know there are files that will not be used on your system, you can save disk space by selecting and installing just the files you need. 7. When the software is installed, exit "smit". 8. Unmount the CD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- INSTALLING ON A GENERIC UNIX HOST HP Netstation Software 7.1 is available in a non-vendor-specific format. The intention is that HP Netstation software can be installed with care onto any UNIX system. The CD-ROM contains a TAR image, called "generic.img", and an installation script, called "install.gen". The installation script unTARs the image and installs it into the same directory structure that is used for vendor-specific hosts (other than HP-UX 10.x). The default base path is /usr/lib/X11/700X. The image and installation script have been tested on the following systems: * HI-UX 02.04 * HP-UX 9.x * Linux 1.1.59 Prerequisite: 70 MB of disk space. To install HP Netstation Software 7.1 on a generic UNIX platform, do the following: 1. Log on as superuser and mount the CD-ROM. 2. Run the installation script install.gen as follows: install.gen [-s source] [-d destination] ------ ----------- The default source is "generic.img". The default destination is "/". The source and destination paths must be absolute (starting from "/"). 3. The file sets that you can install are listed on the screen. Select the file sets that you want to install, or press Return to select them all. For example, type: 1 5 8 4. You are asked if your selections are correct. Answer: Y or N The file sets are installed. Note: In the directory /usr/bin/X11/700X, you will find several files named hpxt.xxxx. These files are peer scripts for local clients, in source form. These scripts must be compiled to be of any use. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- PRINTING THE MANUAL FROM THE CD-ROM The HP Netstation Software 7.1 CD-ROM contains the HP Netstation Software 7.1 Technical Reference manual in both PCL and PostScript formats. You can print additional copies of this manual from the CD-ROM as follows: lp -oraw /cdrom/filename -------- where filename is one of the following: -------- TECHREF7.LJ* - PCL format, HP-UX techref7.lj - PCL format, other system TECHREF7.PS* - PostScript format, HP-UX techref7.ps - PostScript format, other system If you are printing the ENWARE 6.0 Technical Reference (which applies to HP 700/RX stations), filename is one of the following: -------- TECHREF6.LJ* - PCL format, HP-UX techref6.lj - PCL format, other system TECHREF6.PS* - PostScript format, HP-UX techref6.ps - PostScript format, other system VIEWING THE MANUAL ONLINE Once you have installed the HP Netstation Software, users running HP VUE or CDE sessions on an HP-UX host will be able to view the "HP Netstation 7.1 Technical Reference" by clicking on the library icon on the front panel, then selecting the "HP Netstation Software 7.1 Technical Reference". ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of file. 013197dw
