{"id":272,"date":"2022-02-08T19:46:14","date_gmt":"2022-02-08T17:46:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lisas.de\/~hauser\/wp\/?p=272"},"modified":"2022-02-08T19:46:14","modified_gmt":"2022-02-08T17:46:14","slug":"soldering-temperature-sensors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lisas.de\/~hauser\/wp\/?p=272","title":{"rendered":"Soldering temperature sensors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Before I proceed to manufacture the PCBs for the home automation I decided to invest in a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/de.aliexpress.com\/item\/32900232287.html\" target=\"_blank\">solder plate<\/a> and try a very small project: Temperature sensors that consists of a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/datasheets.maximintegrated.com\/en\/ds\/DS18B20.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">DS18B20<\/a> 1-wire temperature sensor and a 2-pin <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wago.com\/de\/leiterplattenanschluss\/smd-leiterplattenklemme-im-gurt\/p\/2059-302_998-403\" target=\"_blank\">SMD push<\/a> connector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First step was to make sure that the solder plate is actually grounded properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"797\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/lisas.de\/~hauser\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/solder_01_ground-797x1024.jpg\" alt=\"ground check\" class=\"wp-image-266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lisas.de\/~hauser\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/solder_01_ground-797x1024.jpg 797w, https:\/\/lisas.de\/~hauser\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/solder_01_ground-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/lisas.de\/~hauser\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/solder_01_ground.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 797px) 100vw, 797px\" \/><figcaption>1 Ohm is acceptable<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After that a layman&#8217;s temperature calibration run. They look good, were reasonably priced and came with a stencil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> On to solder paste application. The setup consists of a piece of wood with two pieces of PCB with the same thickness as the target PCB and the stencil taped in place after alignment. You can see in the image that the stencil is far from perfectly parallel to the hole line. Since I&#8217;m using the solder plate for the first time I did not take enough pictures to capture the whole reflow solder profile. I&#8217;ve set the temperatures manually and have waited using a timer. The relatively slow solder plate ensures the ramping is not too fast. The cooling after reaching maximum heat is a little bit slow, but will be improved once I&#8217;ve the ventilation in place that is definitely required for larger projects. The temperature sensor looks good to me. (Feedback welcome). I did a quick electrical test. With only 2 connections it could easily be done with the multi-meter.
